The Philippines is on track to becoming a hot spot for gambling – a $1 billion gambling resort, the Solaire Resort & Casino, is opening on Saturday, the Associated Press reported on March 14. The 500-room resort is designed by Paul Steelman of a Las Vegas firm, and each room features a Jacuzzi, flat-screen televisions, and a personal control system for the room’s lights, temperature, and curtains. Other amenities include in-room spa treatments, a home theater in each suite, and around-the-clock meals from an appointed chef. The Solaire’s Culinary Director Wolfgang Fischer, has prepared meals at the Emirates Place in Dhabi, the Shangri-La Hotels, the Beverly Hills Hotel, and the Waldorf Astoria in New York.
The resort’s 199,132 square foot casino has 1,495 slots and games and four restaurants, reported a release announcing the resort and casino. The Solaire has its own entertainment venue, where an audience of 200 can watch life performances. There is a ballroom onsite, large enough for 1,000 guests.
The Solaire is part of a larger Entertainment City development, situated in Manila Bay. The complex will reportedly house about a million tourists and will have about 5,000 rooms. Each developer who agreed to build in Entertainment City promised to invest at least $1 billion per resort, according to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation. Three other casinos/resort developments are planned. Solaire and the Entertainment City project is employing thousands of people in the area, with 4,500 people currently working at the resort/casino.

Yep, there’s been a lot of these kinds of development in Manila. If you visit here, you’ll really wonder how many entertainment spots and malls this country can handle (there’s tons of mega sized malls here and they’re typically packed!) But yeah, on the plus side, there’s a lot to do in the country. I’m guessing we’re looking at a steady transformation to the path of Bangkok or Macau or Hong Kong.
