The first stop is Bonanzaville USA, a step back into time. Take the kids to see objects from bygone years. From May to October, Bonanzaville USA has a Pioneer Village open with 43 historic buildings to see and explore.
Next, make your way to the Chateau de Mores State Historical Site. If you and your family love touring old homes, you can’t miss visiting this mansion, once home of the Marquis family. Built in 1883, this home has quite a few of the original furniture from the family. Its former owner, Marquis de Mores operated transportation companies from that time, a stagecoach company, and railroad cars among several other business ventures.
To further your cultural experience in North Dakota, you can’t miss a trip to the Plains Art Museum in Fargo where the kids and you will see thousands of works of art. See an interpretation of the North Dakota sky line or other exhibits in the permanent collection.
When it’s steamy and hot outside, a trip to a beautiful lake can’t be beat. Lake Sakakawea & Garrison Dam, located a mile North of Pick City, is a North Dakota treasure. Canoeing, bird watching or sailing are a few of the leisurely family friendly past-times that families have enjoyed for decades at the lake. Your children will be delighted to know that there are beaches in the area. Near Lake Sakawaea, swimming is allowed at the sandy beach of Fort Stevenson.
Lewis and Clark State Park, north of Lake Sakawaea has a sandy beach area and changing rooms. The beach is located on the northeast side of this state park.
All of your adventures in North Dakota will no doubt leave you all very hungry. Have a special dinner with your family during your trip. Try having the pan seared trout at hotel Donaldson in Fargo. This boutique hotel’s Hodo restaurant is well-known for offering delicious food, made with fresh ingredients. Your family and and you can have a hearty meal of duck, ribs or go all out with the filet mignon.
Other tempting eateries and restaurants in North Dakota include the Mezzaluna, a fine dining establishment in Fargo, Peacock Alley, and Vinyl Taco, an American grill-style restaurant in Bismark, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
North Dakota has a wealth of attractions and naturally beautiful places to see and explore. It’s a great place to visit, and once you do visit, you might even want to live there.
